Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has outlined his ambition to return Manchester United to the top of European and domestic football ahead of the club's Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.
Speaking to Amazon Prime in a conversation with former player Clarence Seedorf, the 21-year-old discussed his career goals and his desire to achieve success under head coach Michael Carrick. "I want to win and I want to win a lot," Mainoo said. "That’s my dream, for this club to be at the top again."
The academy graduate added: "Having a boss like Carrick who has won everything here and seen the glory times, I want to bring that back." United travel to the Estadio Metropolitano for the second matchday of the Champions League league phase, following a 4-0 victory over Sabah. The Evening Standard reports that the Sabah match was the club's first in the competition since 2023.
Mainoo, who made his Champions League debut at age 18, previously appeared as a substitute against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray. Reflecting on those experiences, he said: "I came in the late stages and we were out. I was like ‘I need to feel that again.’"
The midfielder has started five of United's six Premier League fixtures this season. According to the Evening Standard, he recently withdrew from the England national team's Nations League squad to manage his physical workload.
ESPN reports that Clarence Seedorf stated he understands why comparisons are made between himself and the United midfielder.
